Evaluation of the resistance of certain strawberry cultivars to spring freeze and a gradual drop of outside temperatures using the chlorophyll fluorescence technique

Florian Bégard is currently in a three-month internship at the Horticultural Research and Development Centre in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. He is a member of Shahrokh Khanizadeh’s research team studying the genetic and physiological improvement of small fruits. He has a bachelor of science and is currently a second-year student in the university diploma of technology in biological engineering (agronomy) program at Amiens Technical College. He wants to pursue engineering training at the Institut National d'Horticulture (INH) in Angers.

Summary of objectives of the work: In order to determine which of a wide variety of strawberry plants are the most resistant to spring freeze and a gradual drop in outside temperatures, Florian monitors the chlorophyll fluorescence in addition to a range of visual damages as indicators of resistance to low temperatures. Indeed, there seems to be a correlation between the evolution of chlorophyll fluorescence and damage observed on the leaves.
He must accordingly measure the chlorophyll fluorescence and take note of visually apparent damages observed on the leaves following a gradual drop in outside temperatures (25°C to 15°C in 14 hours). Measurements are also taken at 5°C, 0°C, -1°C, -2°C and -3°C (drop of 1°C every 24 hours starting from 0°C).
This method of measurement applied to these various cultivars will make it possible to expand the genetic selection plan by grading the plants based on their resistance to spring freeze and their adaptation to cold. This criterion could accordingly be taken into account before future cross-breeding and even in the development of plantlets to eliminate those that seem the most sensitive to low temperatures.
